WPHS morning weights cancelled

This picture shows the signs that now adorn the Western Plains High School weight room doors.

I have decided to stop opening the weight room from 6 to 8 a.m. every morning because I’ve only had one of my football players show up in the mornings so far.

Getting up at 5:30 every morning and then begin at the school, which I am working maintenance at for the summer, for at least 15 hours each day doesn’t seem worth it when my team doesn’t want to come in to lift and better themselves.

It shocks me how lax the mentality is. I want to restore a winning tradition at WPHS, but that won’t happen unless the athletes decide they want to.

The sad part is, before now, it has been a long time since anyone has pushed these athletes to succeed. Well, that stops with me. I want to win, and we’ve got the athletes to do it.

My only hope with basically locking them out is that it will jolt them from this rut they seem to be in and want to work hard to improve and get a few more checks in the win column.

I’m not going to give up on them, but I’m not going to coddle them. That’s been done for far too long.

This year is the year we set a new standard for WPHS football, and we will never again accept waltzing under that bar.
