UPDATE: Progress made on ‘book reading’ resolution

When 2010 kicked off, I resolved to do many things. I feel I’ve been doing OK with most of them. A couple of them are slipping and might need to be reevaluated. However, I’m doing exceptionally well at one — “Read More Books.”

I’ve been succeeding at this because I’ve been taking an unconventional approach. I’ve been reading, well listening to, audio books. I didn’t think I would ever do that because I truly enjoy the act of reading and holding a bound book, but since I live in western Kansas (I’m not at the edge of the world but I can see it from my front door) I have to drive long distances to go places, such as home to Canton.

Listening to audio books is incredibly rewarding. I’ve gotten so into them that I’ve just sat in my truck listening because I wanted to know what happened. Not to mention that while driving an audio book makes the time fly bye. Unlike listening to music, which is generally three to four minutes in length per song, your subconscious can’t keep track of time and make you feel like you’ve been on the road forever. The tracks play through seamlessly on each disk. It is wonderful.

I must thank my colleague, Jerod Horchem, for showing me the joys of audio books.

Like I say, I love books, and listening to them has only augmented my passion for the written word.

So how successful have I been in the past two months of increasing my efforts to read more? Well, let’s just look at a list of the books I have finished, listed from the earliest to most recent:

"Your Heart Belongs To Me" by Dean Koontz (hard copy)
"The Road" by Cormac McCarthy (hard copy)
"Entombed" by Linda Fairstein (audio book)
"The Last Juror" by John Grisham (audio book)
"Bleachers" by John Grisham (hard copy)

I think I’ve been doing pretty well. I’ve averaged 2.5 books a month. I don’t think that’s too bad, and I’ve only failed at finishing one book — “The Blind Side” by Michael Lewis. I just couldn’t get into it.

Now I’m preparing to start my next book. I think I’m going to give “The Key To Midnight” by Dean Koontz a shot. Wish me luck, and stay tuned for more updates on my resolution successes and failures.
