The Kansas Sampler Foundation is a great organization focusing on promoting Kansas, specifically rural Kansas.
It is based in Inman, Kan., and I know the two who run the outfit. They are great people.
They’ve recently been holding contest naming the “8 Wonders” of various categories outside of the overall “8 Wonders of Kansas,” such as architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography and history.
The latest in this series of contests is complete, and it was about Kansas people.
Here are the “8 Wonders of Kansas People” winners:
- Amelia Earhart, Atchison
- Buffalo Soldiers, Fort Leavenworth
- Carry A. Nation, Medicine Lodge, Kiowa
- Emil J. Kapaun, Pilsen
- George Washington Carver, Minneapolis, Beeler
- James Naismith, Lawrence
- Martin & Osa Johnson, Chanute
- William Allen White, Emporia
Obviously my favorite person in the group is William Allen White because he is a fellow journalist, but all of the people are very worthy of the honor.
